Welcome to the Australian Association for Environmental Education Website.

You will find that we are made up of many parts and our members are just like you, passionate about helping others learn to live more sustainably.

Some of you will be volunteers in local groups involved in hands on rehabilitation projects, probably with the assistance of your local governments. Some may come from small business and training schemes learning about state and national regulations and initiatives for sustainability. Others will be looking for ideas to help in classes at schools or in the home as we face challenges of working and living in a healthy way.

The national Executive is made up of members from the states and territories in Australia. With the support of this group my work as the President is to respond to members needs and provide tools and support for your work. As you look through the website we are sure that it will be a useful resource for you as it continues to grow.

Yours sincerely

Dr Jennifer Pearson

President of AAEE

This is a new article for the SIG section, you can edit, leave comments etc on this page. The EC SIG was established in 2003 by AAEE to recognise an emerging group of early childhood professionals working across the early childhood sector to promote environmental education.

The group includes practising early childhood educators, lecturers at university and TAFE, primary school teachers, educators in extension education services and others with a professional interest in early childhood environmental education

The group functions across Australia as a network for coordinating, advocating and resourcing early childhood environmental education. The SIG group has developed two Action Plans to date, the Action Plan 2007- 09 identifies current priorities for action in the early childhood sector. SIG members connect electronically by email and meet locally or at the biannual AAEE conference. The SIG convenor circulates a quarterly newsletter and contributions are welcome.
To join the Early Childhood SIG when you join AAEE, nominate your interest on your membership application form or membership renewal, or contact Sue Elliott – Team Leader susan.elliott(at)rmit.edu.au

Early childhood is usually developmentally defined as the years from birth to eight years of age, but in practice often refers to young children and the services they attend before school age. Education for sustainability or environmental education is described as a life long process and early childhood educators strongly affirm that this process begins at birth. Early childhood is a significant developmental period and can be described as a “green window of opportunity”. An opportunity for young children to experientially connect with the natural environment, construct values and attitudes about sustainability, and practise the skills of sustainable living. Many strategies fundamental to education for sustainability are embedded in early childhood pedagogy and early childhood educators are uniquely placed to empower young children to live healthy and sustainable lives.
